Athens and Paris deepen cooperation in defense, economy and technology, strengthening their role in the EU and the Mediterranean
The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, signed an expanded strategic agreement aimed at deepening bilateral relations in several key areas.
The agreement, dubbed an “Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” expands cooperation beyond defense to include the economy, technology, migration, the environment, education, and culture. The document also provides for closer coordination within the European Union and in international organizations.
According to Greek media, in terms of security and defense, the two countries renewed the 2021 agreement for a five-year period, with automatic renewal. The parties commit to strengthening military capabilities, industrial cooperation and innovation in sectors such as cyber, drones and space operations.
On the diplomatic front, Athens and Paris aim to increase coordination in multilateral forums such as the UN, NATO and the EU, as well as to support the enlargement of the union on the basis of merit and respect for the rule of law. The agreement also emphasizes commitment to international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
In the economic field, the document foresees joint investments in advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and low-carbon energy. The two countries also aim to strengthen trade, supply chains and the EU's economic security.
Another important component is related to climate and the environment. Greece and France are committed to cooperating to protect biodiversity, especially in the Mediterranean, and to combat pollution, including that from plastic.
In the field of migration, the agreement provides for coordination on the management of migratory flows, the fight against human trafficking and the strengthening of border control in accordance with international standards.
The document also includes cooperation in education, scientific research and culture, with the aim of increasing academic exchanges and joint projects.
The agreement was signed in Athens on April 25, 2026 and is considered an important step in strengthening the role of the two countries in Europe and the Mediterranean region.
