Hamas has condemned Israel's decision to cut off electricity supplies to Gaza. A member of the Palestinian Islamist movement's political bureau called the decision a "petty and unacceptable policy of blackmail."
" We strongly condemn [Israel's] decision to cut off electricity to Gaza, after depriving it of food, medicine and water ," said Izzat al-Rishq, a member of the political bureau of the Palestinian Islamic movement.
Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced earlier in the day that he had ordered the interruption of electricity supplies to the Palestinian enclave.
The only power line between Israel and Gaza powers the main water desalination plant in the Palestinian territory, which serves more than 600,000 people.
