The French Foreign Minister declared that Vladimir Putin lost the “Trojan Horse” in the European Union with the defeat of Viktor Orbán in the elections. He called on the newly elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar to unblock aid to Ukraine by lifting the veto.
"It is a loss for Viktor Orban, it is a loss for some of the pillars of this International of Reaction and among the first for Vladimir Putin, who loses his Trojan Horse in the European Union," declared Jean-Noël Barrot on the RFI radio network.
"What we expect from his successor Péter Magyar is to do what he said, to restore some of the pillars of the rule of law that Viktor Orban destroyed, to restore Hungary to its rightful place among European countries, to lift some unjustified vetoes," the French Foreign Minister added.
"Regarding in particular our support for Ukraine, the policy he (Orban) pursued constituted an obstacle, which fortunately can be removed," said Jean-Noël Barrot.
Since his return to power in 2010, Viktor Orban has systematically weakened the rule of law, the institutions of checks and balances on the executive branch, and the framework of democratic values and individual freedoms, entering into open conflict with the European Union through the violation of European treaties, which Budapest pledged to respect upon EU membership in 2004. The climax of this conflict was his opposition to the EU's policy of supporting Ukraine after the Russian invasion in 2022.
Orban's Hungary has cultivated close relations with powers that aim to weaken the European Union, such as Donald Trump's United States, China, and Russia, from which it has continued to be supplied with hydrocarbons while ignoring other alternatives.
As for Moscow, the media have uncovered fragments of telephone conversations that show systematic leaks of information from Orbán's Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, to his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during meetings of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
