About 1,000 Kenyan nationals joined Russian forces after being lured with false promises of jobs, according to a Kenyan intelligence report tabled in parliament.
The report was submitted on Tuesday by parliamentary majority leader Kimani Ichung'wah, who accused officials at the Russian Embassy in Nairobi of colluding with recruitment agencies to defraud Kenyan citizens.
The Russian embassy in the Kenyan capital denied the allegations. In a statement, it stressed that "the Russian Federation does not exclude citizens of foreign countries from the opportunity to voluntarily register in the armed forces."
According to Ichung'wah, intelligence reports indicate that 89 Kenyans are on the front lines, 39 are hospitalized, 28 are missing in action and others have returned home. He added that at least one person has been confirmed killed.
In recent weeks, dozens of Kenyan families have asked the government to intervene to return their relatives from Russia. According to family members, some have been forced to fight, while others are being held as prisoners of war in Ukraine.
The report comes at a time when international security institutions have assessed that Moscow is seeking ways to compensate for heavy losses on the battlefield, including through recruitment abroad.
