Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she was surprised by French President Emmanuel Macron's reaction to her comments following the murder of Quentin Deranque in Lyon, stressing that her stance was not aimed at France.
" Honestly, I was very surprised by Macron's statement, I didn't expect it ," Meloni said during an interview. She explained that her reflection was not specifically related to France, but to a broader trend that, according to her, is deepening political polarization in major Western democracies.
" I see a climate that I don't like. I see it in Italy, I see it in France, I see it in the United States ," said the prime minister. She recalled that she had reacted in other cases, such as the murder of Charlie Kirk, emphasizing that this is not about interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, but about a reflection that, according to her, the ruling classes must make to avoid returning to periods of political tension.
Meloni also mentioned Italy's historical experience with terrorism, adding that France also knows this chapter, having granted political asylum to former members of the Red Brigades for several decades. " I did not experience it as an intervention ," she concluded.
Meloni also commented on her participation in the "Board of Peace" meeting on Gaza, held in Washington. She said that Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani had informed her about a meeting with concrete content, which was attended by most European countries and actors involved in the region.
According to her, a united contribution from the international community is essential for such a delicate issue as the Middle East, especially for the Mediterranean countries. " For this reason I considered it essential that Italy be present ," declared Meloni.
