Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared that Europe is preparing for war with Russia, while according to him, Hungary will remain an "island of peace and security" in an unstable world.
Speaking at an anti-war rally in Budapest, Orban said Budapest would not participate in escalating the conflict in Ukraine.
“We are facing difficult times, with war looming. The European Union has already switched to a war economy and wants to send more money, weapons and soldiers to Ukraine. We cannot predict the day or hour when the first EU soldier will enter Ukraine, but it will happen and we must stay away from it. I am committed to keeping Hungary an island of peace and security in this unstable world,” he said.
According to Orbán, Hungarians have historical experience with conflicts and do not want younger generations to face such a reality.
"We do not want such a future for our children," he stressed, adding that young Hungarians would dedicate their lives to Hungary rather than die for Ukraine.
The Hungarian prime minister's statements come at a time when the European Union and NATO countries have increased military and financial support for Ukraine in its confrontation with Russia. Budapest has maintained a more reserved stance towards EU policies in this regard and has repeatedly called for negotiations to end the conflict.
Hungary has opposed several European Union initiatives related to military aid to Kiev and sanctions against Moscow, arguing that the priority should be achieving a ceasefire and starting peace talks.
