5.6 magnitude earthquake shakes eastern Turkey

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake has struck the province of Malatya, Turkey, and was felt in several surrounding regions, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority announced.

According to official data, the earthquake struck at 09:00 and had a depth of about 7.03 kilometers. Tremors were also felt in other provinces such as Adıyaman, Elazığ, Tunceli and Şanlıurfa, as well as in areas of Kahramanmaraş and Diyarbakır.

In the first statement by the authorities, there are no reports of damage or serious consequences so far, while search and rescue teams have immediately begun verifications on the ground.

The Turkish Ministry of Interior has announced that all relevant units are engaged in monitoring the situation and are continuing work to assess possible damage.

Meanwhile, seismology expert Süleyman Pampal has stated that the Malatya region is a seismically sensitive area, warning that the surrounding cracks could generate earthquakes above magnitude 7.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and follow official instructions.
