EU foreign ministers will discuss potential negotiators with Russia at a meeting in Cyprus next week.
The European Union is considering the possibility of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel or former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi being included as intermediary figures in communications with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine.
The news was reported by the Financial Times, citing informed sources close to diplomatic discussions in Brussels.

At the same time, China and the United States have begun discussions on a mutual reduction in trade tariffs. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that the two sides have agreed in principle to work on a framework agreement that envisages reducing tariffs on products worth at least $30 billion for each side. The announcement came a few days after US President Donald Trump visited Beijing.
Moscow also confirmed that US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to visit Russia in the near future. The news was made public by Kirill Dmitriev, the Kremlin's representative for international economic cooperation, who did not provide details on the date or topics to be discussed during the visit.
In Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held talks focused on the international situation and cooperation between the two countries. Xi called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Middle East and stressed that a resumption of the conflict would be unacceptable. He said negotiations remain the main path to reducing tensions in the region.
The Chinese president said the Middle East is at a sensitive stage between escalation and stabilization, and warned that the continuation of the conflict could affect global energy supplies, industrial chains and international trade. Xi also outlined his four-point proposal for maintaining stability in the region.
During the meeting, Xi praised China-Russia relations as stable and said that strategic cooperation between the two countries has been gradually strengthened through political coordination and mutual trust. Putin's visit to Beijing came a week after US President Donald Trump's visit to China.
For his part, Putin stated that Moscow and Beijing will continue the visa-free regime for citizens of both countries. He said that cultural and educational contacts have expanded and that cooperation in these areas is entering a new phase.
Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine continues to rage. Ukrainian authorities reported that a Russian attack overnight in the city of Dnipro left two dead and six wounded. Five of the injured were taken to hospital, three of whom are in serious condition.
Other drone attacks and bombings were also reported in the Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and Odessa regions. In the city of Konotop, in the Sumy region, local authorities said at least six people were injured after a massive drone attack on residential areas.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, an airstrike destroyed a private home and injured four people, including two children. In Odessa, damage was reported to residential areas, warehouses and critical infrastructure, while in Kharkiv, authorities confirmed another drone strike in the Novobavarsky district, with no reports of casualties.
