Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in his evening speech that he will replace Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov. Rustem Umerov was appointed in his place.
" I decided to replace the Minister of Defense of Ukraine. Oleksii Reznikov experienced more than 550 days of large-scale war. I believe that the ministry needs new approaches and other forms of interaction both with the army and with society. Rustem Umerov should now to head the Ministry. I expect the Parliament to support this candidate ," concluded Zelensky.
Reznikov had been accused of being involved in a corruption case involving some military supplies at inflated prices and was already reported to have resigned a few days ago.
Reznikov has always denied allegations of corruption, although, according to an investigation carried out by various Ukrainian media, in the fall of 2022 the Ministry of Defense had signed a contract with a Turkish company for the supply of winter uniforms, the price of which after signing it tripled.
