A "severe staffing crisis" is facing a prison in Britain, where a total of 18 female staff have been fired or resigned in recent years over sex scandals and affairs they had with inmates.
According to the Daily Mail, a recent report by an independent watchdog said understaffing and the lack of experience of new staff are "destabilizing factors" at HMP Berëyn, Britain's largest prison located in north Wales.
It is about a prison in which 2,100 prisoners of "medium risk" categories B and C are serving their sentence, as stated in the relevant publication.
Although the 18 cases date back to 2017, three prison guards, 27-year-old Jennifer Gavan, her partner Ayshea Gunn and 26-year-old Emily Watson, were jailed last year for their relationships with inmates.
Watson had three sexual encounters with her incarcerated boyfriend in his cell, one of them on Christmas Day.
Gunn had made over 1,200 phone calls (including "sexual video calls") to her boyfriend Khuram Razaq, who she had even given her underwear to keep in her cell. In April 2020, Gavan started a relationship with inmate Alex Coxon who she gave a phone to send sex videos to. In December of last year, she was imprisoned for 8 months for breach of duty.
