Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff has said that negotiations between the US and Russia could be on the verge of something that would be very important for the world at large.
Speaking to Fox News last night, Witkoff discussed what he perceives as Vladimir Putin's demands, after meeting with the Russian leader for talks in St. Petersburg on Friday.
" In the end, we actually achieved, that Putin's demand is to achieve, to have a permanent peace ," he said.
He also hinted at what Putin's security demands might be, saying that a peace agreement would also deal with the annexed territories.
" Peace is about the so-called five territories, but there's a lot more: there are security protocols, there's no NATO, Article 5 of NATO, I mean, it's just a lot of details attached to it ," he said.
Article 5 is the principle of the NATO alliance where an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all members, with a coordinated response.
" It's a complicated situation... rooted in... some real problematic things happening between the two countries, and I think we could be on the verge of something that would be very, very important for the world at large," he stressed.
He added that he believed there was an opportunity to reshape Russia-United States relations through some very compelling trade opportunities that would also bring real stability to the region.
