“The entire Gaza Strip must be flattened. Like in Auschwitz. Let the whole world see what Israel can do", was this strong statement of the mayor of Metula, which revived strong international condemnations.
David Azulai, mayor of the city of Metula, during an interview on Sunday on a radio station, called for all Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip to be sent to refugee camps in Lebanon and then to create an area in the Palestinian enclave that would be similar to Auschwitz.
“The entire Gaza Strip must be emptied. To flatten. Like in Auschwitz. Let it become a museum for the whole world to see what Israel can do. Because October 7 was in a way a second Holocaust,", he said, referring to the Hamas attacks.
The Polish Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum strongly condemned Azulai's statement.
“David Azoulay seems to want to use the symbol of the largest cemetery in the world as some kind of sick, disgusting, pseudo-artistic, symbolic expression. We hope that the Israeli authorities will react to such shameful behavior, as terrorism can never be an answer to terrorism,”, a spokesman for the museum said in a post on X.
The Israeli mayor responded by dismissing criticism of the museum and accused the Poles of anti-Semitism.
He told the Israeli newspaper Times of Israel that he never called for the killing of anyone, saying that he wanted to see the population of Gaza restored but under control. /Times of Israel
