Strong earthquake shakes Turkey, reports of collapsed buildings (Video)

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale was recorded on Sunday evening in Turkey, with the epicenter in Balikesir province, while the focal depth was recorded at 11 kilometers.

Three subsequent aftershocks were then recorded with magnitudes of 4.6 and 4.1 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake was felt mainly in Istanbul, but also on the islands in the eastern Aegean and the Sea of Marmara. The earthquake was particularly felt in Mytilene, creating panic among residents.

There are reports of a complete collapse of a building, while according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, no injuries have been reported so far.

Balıkesir Mayor Ahmet Akın told CNN Turk that there are problems in some buildings.

The Istanbul Governor's Office stated that there were no unusual events related to the earthquake, which was also felt in Istanbul.

"The 6.1-magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter in the Sındırgı neighborhood of Balıkesir, was also felt in Istanbul. So far, no adverse events have been experienced and our teams on the ground have started scanning operations," the statement said. 

According to the Athens Observatory, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale.

According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center, this is the fourth strong earthquake in Western Turkey in less than 2 days.
