Wildfires sweep Europe, one person dies in Greece

One person has died in Greece after wildfires ravaged 16,000 hectares of land, amid a dire situation across Europe. In the Keratea region, near Athens, an elderly man was found dead in his bed inside a hut after the fire broke out on Friday.

The National Observatory of Athens warned that the strong winds that are favoring the flames will continue at least until Monday.

In Italy, firefighters have been battling a blaze on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius near Naples since Friday. All tourist routes to the crater have been closed. Six Canadair aircraft and surveillance drones are being used to put out the fire.

In France, some 1,400 firefighters are working to prevent the reactivation of the biggest fire in decades in the Aude region, which has burned more than 160 square kilometers of forest and vineyards. The fire left one dead and 25 injured, including 19 firefighters.

Temperatures of up to 39°C and strong winds are expected to complicate the extinguishing, which could last for weeks.

In Spain, firefighters are battling a blaze in the province of Avila, 100 kilometers west of Madrid. Extreme temperatures are also expected to continue there until next week, increasing the risk of it spreading.
