At least 13 migrants were found in critical condition in a refrigerated truck as they attempted to cross clandestinely from France to the United Kingdom.
The migrants boarded the refrigerated truck at the Saint-Hilaire-Cottes rest area on the A26 motorway, 75 kilometres from Calais, in northern France.
All the migrants were of Eritrean nationality and preliminary investigations show that they took advantage of the moment when the truck driver was sleeping, as they forced open the truck's door, entering without considering that it was refrigerated.
The truck was transporting cherries from Morocco. Within hours, the migrants were battling the extreme cold, but were trapped in the truck.
A source said that "another driver who was in the rest area heard knocking inside the truck. The people inside were desperate, they were screaming and yelling, but all the noises were extremely muffled."
Emergency services, including paramedics, arrived at the scene, along with 10 gendarmes.
Everyone in the truck was initially evacuated to a field hospital.
And then four of them were rushed to emergency wards in Arras and Saint-Omer, suffering from a range of health problems, including hypothermia.
