Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed "deep pain" and concern over the joint attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, stressing that they endanger the stability of the region.
At an event in Istanbul, Erdogan declared that Ankara condemns the attacks, which he said “clearly violate Iran’s sovereignty and threaten the peace of the friendly and brotherly Iranian people.” He added that recent developments increase the risk of a wider escalation.
" Regardless of the reason, we consider Iran's missile and drone attacks on our brotherly countries in the Persian Gulf unacceptable ," the Turkish president stressed, referring to Tehran's response.
Erdogan warned that if reason does not prevail and diplomacy is not given a chance, “our region faces the risk of being drawn into a ring of fire.” He called on all actors, especially countries in the Islamic world, to take urgent action to prevent further bloodshed.
The Turkish president announced that Ankara will immediately intensify diplomatic efforts, first to secure a ceasefire and then to return the parties to the negotiating table.
The Israeli and American attacks on Iran began early Saturday, while talks between Washington and Tehran over Iran's nuclear program, brokered by Oman, were still underway. The latest round of negotiations in Geneva ended on Thursday.
