Two Israeli television stations reported that a photo purporting to show the dead body of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been shown to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.
According to the same sources, Khamenei was allegedly killed during an Israeli attack on his residential compound this morning. There has been no independent confirmation of this claim so far.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaei Baghaei stated that he had no comment regarding these reports.
Meanwhile, a senior US administration official, quoted by Reuters, said that President Trump had "no choice" but to order the attack on Iran. According to him, Washington considered military action necessary due to the lack of "seriousness" on the part of the Iranian side in the negotiations.
The source said that US negotiators concluded that Iran intended to maintain its uranium enrichment capacity, with the potential to develop a weapons program in the future. “The US offered Iran free supplies of nuclear fuel for civilian purposes, but Tehran insisted on maintaining its enrichment capacity,” the official said.
According to the same source, Iran also refused to negotiate over its ballistic missile program and its support for armed groups in the region. The US administration claims it had intelligence indicating that Tehran was rebuilding capabilities damaged by the June attacks.
