A woman in her 90s has been found alive under the rubble five days after a devastating earthquake struck central Japan.
Search and rescue workers found him under the rubble of a two-story building in Suzu City. More than 120 people have been confirmed dead and 200 are missing from the 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of the Sea of Japan on Monday.
According to the BBC , the elderly woman was found alive but suffering from hypothermia. At the same location, rescuers also found a woman in her 40s in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, reports said. Japan's Self-Defense Forces are using helicopters for rescue operations and delivering supplies to isolated areas as some roads remain blocked.
The work of search and rescue teams is being hampered by wet weather in some areas hit by the earthquake, with authorities warning that even a small amount of rain could trigger more landslides. They also warned that a cold front is expected today, which could bring snowfall until Monday in the mountainous areas of earthquake-hit Ishikawa Prefecture.
As of Saturday, about 23,200 households were without electricity in Ishikawa and more than 66,400 lacked running water. Ishikawa Governor Hiroshi Hase said during a disaster management meeting that the prefecture was facing extremely dire situations. He also warned that restoring running water will take a long time as many water pipes have cracks.
Several hospitals and facilities for the care of the elderly and disabled have also lost power and water. Japan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, and activity has increased around Noto since late 2020. More than 500 small and medium-sized earthquakes have struck there over the past three years.
