Moscow launched a missile attack on Kiev in the early hours of Sunday, while Poland announced that fighter jets had been quickly dispatched to the southeast of the country.
At least three people were injured and several fires broke out in Kiev after a Russian missile attack, the mayor and military administration of the Ukrainian capital said.
Fires were reported in at least three districts of Kiev, Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said in a post on Telegram.
"Explosions in the capital. Air defense is working. Stay in shelters!" the mayor said via Telegram. He then added that emergency response services were called and went to at least three districts of Kiev.
Fires broke out and at least three people were "injured," Mr Klitschko added.
All of Ukraine was on air alert after the country's Air Force warned of an attack, including areas bordering Poland, forcing the NATO member to "scramble" aircraft to ensure air security.
In response, the Polish armed forces' operations command said Polish and allied fighter jets had been scrambled to southeastern Poland due to Russian missile strikes in western Ukraine.
The hasty takeoff of the aircraft was decided "due to the intensity of the aviation activity of the Russian Federation" and the aim is for the aircraft to "guarantee security" in the sectors of Polish territory adjacent to the targeted areas of Ukraine, he explained via X.
Separately, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that air defense units intercepted and destroyed 11 Ukrainian drones overnight. They were shot down in the border regions of Kursk and Belgorod, as well as in the southern region of Rastov, the ministry said via Telegram.
Yuriy Slyusar, the latter's acting regional governor, reported earlier via Telegram that no injuries were reported, but debris from an unmanned aerial vehicle fell on public administration buildings in one region.
Sunday's attacks in Kiev came after officials in the southern Mykolaiv region said three people were wounded in Russian strikes. A day earlier, a Russian strike killed at least 19 people, including nine children, in the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched with a full-scale invasion of its smaller neighbor three years ago.
