He set himself on fire outside the court where the trial for Donald Trump was

Maxwell Azzarello, who set himself on fire outside the New York courthouse where former US President Donald Trump is being tried, has died.

Maxwell Azzarello was "pronounced dead by hospital staff," police told NBC News.

Azzarello, in his 30s, from St. Augustine, Florida, tossed conspiracy theory pamphlets into the air before setting himself on fire in a designated protest area for pro- and anti-Trump demonstrators on Friday.

He took a box from his bag containing the fuel, threw it on his body and then set himself on fire, police said.

Officers and civilians ran to the protest area and tried to put out the flames using coats and fire extinguishers.

Four NYPD officers suffered minor injuries from exposure to the fire, authorities said.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters that the leaflets dropped by the victim were based on propaganda, almost a kind of conspiracy theory pamphlet.

The incident occurred after the 12-member jury was selected in Trump's trial. Trump's office released a statement Friday afternoon offering its condolences to witnesses who were traumatized by the tragedy.

Karoline Leavitt, Trump's campaign secretary, said: "Not knowing the motives behind this situation, it's hard to come to a conclusion other than to say we're thankful that no one other than the individual in question was hurt."

Video shared on social media shows Azzarello lying on his back on the sidewalk outside the courthouse, his lower body on fire.

Another man tries to put out the flames, while police officers are seen running to the scene as the fire is extinguished.

"I heard someone yell, 'He's going to set himself on fire,'" Ed Quinn, a freelance photojournalist who was outside the courthouse at the time, told NBC News. "I saw him throwing petrol on his face, on purpose. He had a gray T-shirt on.”

Quinn said it took police about a minute to arrive.
