A shooting at a high school in the community of Tumbler Ridge, in the province of British Columbia in Canada, left eight people dead and more than 20 injured. Canadian authorities identified the suspected perpetrator as 18-year-old Jesse van Rootselaar, who then took her own life with a gun on the school premises.
According to police, van Rootselaar was born biologically male and had been transitioning for six years, identifying as a woman. Investigators did not find a suicide note, while the motives for the attack remain under investigation.
The perpetrator had dropped out of the same school about four years ago. Police confirmed that the victims included a 39-year-old teacher, three 12-year-old girls, two boys aged 12 and 13, another 39-year-old and an 11-year-old boy. Two of the victims – the 18-year-old’s mother and half-brother – were found murdered in an apartment.
Authorities initially reported nine victims, but later revised the toll to eight, after one seriously injured woman survived.
Police said they had been called to the van Rootselaar family's home several times in recent years for mental health issues, and in some cases the reports involved firearms. A shotgun and a pistol were seized at the scene and have been sent for ballistics testing.
The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon. Law enforcement arrived at the school and found six people dead and dozens more injured. Two of the injured were transported by helicopter to a regional hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, while about 25 people received medical attention at the local health center.
Tumbler Ridge is a small community of about 2,400 people. Such incidents remain rare in Canada, which has stricter gun laws than the United States. Mass shootings at schools are considered particularly unusual.
Videos posted on social media showed the moments after the attack, with armed police forces surrounding the school complex as students and staff rushed out of the building. A helicopter monitored the area from the air.
Investigations continue to uncover the full circumstances of the incident and to clarify the author's motives.
