The former director of Israel's Shin Bet internal security service, Ronen Bar, has been urgently evacuated from the United Arab Emirates after receiving a warning of a threat to his security linked to Iran, Israeli television Channel 12 reported on Sunday night.
According to the report, Bar and his wife were in the United Arab Emirates several months ago to attend a security conference. Channel 12 claimed that the event was organized by the Emirati Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. However, a source close to the Emirati authorities denied this claim.
Channel 13 reported that the conference was attended by senior security officials from the United Arab Emirates, as well as intelligence representatives and decision-makers from various countries around the world.
During his stay in the Emirates, Bar received a security alert about a possible threat against him. After assessing the situation, Israeli authorities decided to immediately remove him and his wife and return them to Israel.
According to Israeli media, the evacuation operation took place under strict confidentiality. Ronen Bar did not comment publicly on the reports.
Israel and the United Arab Emirates established diplomatic, economic, and security relations in 2020 under the Abraham Accords. Cooperation between the two countries has also been influenced by shared concerns about Iran's regional activities.
The report comes at a time of ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel. Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior Israeli officials made secret visits to the United Arab Emirates during the recent conflict. Emirati authorities have dismissed the claims as baseless.
