Taiwan's armed forces conduct land, air and naval maneuvers to test combat readiness and operational coordination in the face of growing pressure from Beijing.
US President Donald Trump's unexpected political moves are causing concern not only in Europe and the Middle East, but also in East Asia, where the Taiwan issue continues to be considered one of the most sensitive topics of the international order since World War II.
The recent meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Donald Trump has added to the uncertainty in Taipei. Taiwanese authorities are closely monitoring diplomatic developments between Washington and Beijing, amid speculation that the US administration may be willing to make concessions on the Taiwan issue in exchange for Chinese cooperation on other international issues, including Iran.
In this climate, the Taiwanese government has launched a five-day military exercise to demonstrate its defensive capability and readiness to respond to any potential threat.
Since Monday, Taiwan's land, air and naval forces have been conducting joint maneuvers with the aim of testing combat readiness, strengthening response capabilities and verifying the effectiveness of coordinated operations in the face of growing military pressure from China.
Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense said the drills, which will continue until June 26, are part of the armed forces' annual training program. According to the ministry, the objective is to prepare units for rapid mobilization, familiarize themselves with real battlefield conditions, and strengthen the ability to transition from peacetime to wartime.
Military authorities added that the maneuvers also aim to improve the implementation of the joint operational plan, using various training scenarios and conditions as close to operational reality as possible.
According to Taiwanese news agency CNA, armored vehicles have been seen moving along Provincial Road 31, a strategic transportation corridor in the north of the island. In Taoyuan City, the presence of military vehicles on urban roads attracted the attention of residents and was widely documented in photographs.
So far there has been no official reaction from Beijing, but observers estimate that Chinese authorities are closely following the development of the exercises. / Adapted from "Corriere Della Sera"
