Hungary's government has announced the launch of a broad package of constitutional reforms and anti-corruption measures, which are expected to be implemented in the coming months. The news was announced by Prime Minister Péter Magyar himself during a speech to parliament.
According to Magyar, the executive branch intends to take concrete steps to remove the country's president through a constitutional amendment. The full constitutional reform is expected to officially begin in the fall.
"We will take economic, political and legal measures to fight corruption and strengthen transparency in public administration," Magyar said.
One of the most important initiatives announced is the creation of the National Agency for the Protection and Recovery of Assets. This new institution will have broad powers to identify, seize and recover illegally obtained assets.
Hungarian authorities emphasized that the main objective of the reforms is to strengthen the rule of law, increase citizens' trust in institutions, and eradicate corruption at all levels of government.
The reforms come at a crucial time for Hungary, as the country has often come under international criticism over rule of law and transparency issues. The government expects the new packages to bring about structural changes and improve the country's image both within the European Union and internationally.
