Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that Israel's approved plan to take full control of Gaza City will not save the remaining hostages, but instead will endanger lives and "increase the number of crimes" in the enclave.
" An expanded military operation "will not rescue the hostages, which will cost the lives of many soldiers and destroy the lives of many uninvolved Palestinians. It will increase the number of crimes that will not be committed as part of a policy. There is no policy of committing crimes or genocide or anything like that. But that is the nature of this operation ," he said in an interview with "CNN."
Last year, a United Nations investigation into the early months of the Gaza war found that both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes and serious violations of international law. Another UN report accused Israel of pursuing a “coordinated policy” of destroying Gaza’s healthcare system in attacks it called war crimes.
Olmert said ending the war would save hostages still being held in Gaza and other victims. He blamed the agenda of current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the decision.
"The prime minister is personally a captive of a group of messianic partners in the coalition government who are holding the course of events. And they threaten that if the decision is different, they will topple the government. This is the universal consensus in Israel today that this is a political expediency. There is no doubt about that ," said Olmert, who was prime minister from 2006 to 2009.
