Italy in mourning, the legendary former president Giorgio Napolitano passes away

The former president of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, has passed away at the age of 98. The death occurred in a clinic, where the president had been hospitalized for some time.

By his side in his final moments was his family, especially his son Giulio and his wife, 89, as well as historical communications adviser Gianni Matteoli.

On 21 May 2022, Napolitano underwent abdominal surgery and was hospitalized for nine days at Spallanzani Hospital in Rome. While earlier on April 24, 2018, he was operated on for a partial aorta dysfunction.

Napolitano was elected President of the Republic on 15 May 2006 and then for a second time on 22 April 2013, this time remaining in office for less than two years.

Born in Naples in 1925, he was the eleventh President of the Italian Republic. In 1992 he succeeded Oscar Luigi Scalfato as President of the Chamber and in 1996 he was Minister of the Interior in the Prodi I government.

He was the first president of the Republic to be re-elected for a second term, and in sensational fashion: with a very wide range of parties lining up "in procession" to the Quirinale, to beg him to stay a little longer. An extraordinary election, to give time to reform politics and Italy to start again.

Who was Giorgio Napolitano?

Giorgio Napolitano was born in Naples on June 29, 1925. He was married to Clio Bittoni and has two sons, Giovanni and Giulio.

Napolitano graduated in law from the University of Naples in 1947. Since 1942, when he was a student, Napolitano joined an anti-fascist group and in 1945 he joined the Italian Communist Party where he later became a post leader held until the creation of the Democratic Party of the Italian Left.

Napolitano was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the first time in 1953 and, apart from the Fourth Legislature, he has been present in parliament as a deputy until 1996, always elected in the Naples area.

As a deputy, his parliamentary activity began as a member of the Parliamentary Committee on the budget. In the eighth and ninth legislatures from 1981 to 1986, Napolitano led the parliamentary group of communists in the Chamber of Deputies.

During the 80s, as a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, his activity was mainly focused on international issues and European policies. In 1989, he was elected a member of the European Parliament, a position he held until 1992. That same year, Napolitano was elected Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, a position he held until 1994. From 1996 to 1998, Napolitano held the position of Minister of internal in Romano Prodi's government.

From June 1999 to 2004, he headed the Constitutional Affairs Committee in the European Parliament. In 2005, Napolitano was elected senator for life.

In May 2006, Girgio Napolitano was elected President of Italy with 543 votes. In April 2013, Napolitano was re-elected President with 738 votes./ Pamphlet
