Around 450,000 people are said to have fled Gaza City, but those left behind are living in chaos, foreign media report.
The Israeli military warned on Friday that it would strike Gaza City with "unprecedented force" after nearly half a million residents fled the enclave amid a large-scale operation to capture it, denounced by most of the international community.
After receiving new assurances of "unwavering" American support, Israel announced on Tuesday the launch of a ground and air operation in the coastal enclave's largest urban center, in its northern part, to eradicate the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, whose incursion into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, triggered the war in the Gaza Strip.
"Israeli forces will continue their operations with unprecedented force," said Colonel Avichai Andrai, an Israeli army spokesman, ordering the population to leave the city.
Since last month, the military has deployed more than 180 robots or drones packed with explosives to destroy parts of the city. The areas of Tel al-Hawa, Sheikh Radwan, Tufa, Jabal Nazla and Saftawi Road are among the main areas where Israel has demolished residential buildings. In these areas, according to Israeli officials, more than 200 homes have been destroyed.
In addition, to capitalize on the outcome of the operation, the Israeli military is also deploying armored units to Gaza City, which has already been largely destroyed.
But residents describe a chaotic situation.
"We have nowhere to go," Umm Mohammed al-Khattab, a Palestinian living in the Sati camp in the western part of Gaza City, told AFP.
"My seven children and I still live in tents in the western part of the city after the (Israeli) occupation bombed our house," she added.
The UN estimated at the end of August that the number of inhabitants of the city and its surroundings was around one million people.
According to the Israeli military, 480,000 have since fled. The Civil Defense Agency also said yesterday that a slightly smaller number, 450,000 residents, had fled./ Pamphlet
