Of all the numerous nuclear facilities that Iran has, Israel appears to have struck only a small number, including Natanz.

This raises a fundamental question: why this particular center?

The answer is that Natanz is the main facility for large-scale uranium enrichment, a process that produces material that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.

Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons and is not known to have produced military-grade enriched uranium, but the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has recently assessed that Tehran could produce nuclear weapons if it further refines the uranium it possesses.

Natanz has tens of thousands of centrifuges and is one of the main centers that contributes significantly to the increase in Iran's reserves of highly enriched uranium. A strike on Natanz would mean an interruption of this process.

The 2015 nuclear deal limited the activities Iran was allowed to conduct at Natanz, but since the US withdrawal from the deal in 2018, during the presidency of Donald Trump, activity at the facility has increased significantly.

Israel is believed to have carried out several sabotage operations against Natanz in recent years. The facility was hit by a major cyberattack in 2010, and was damaged by explosives hidden in a table in 2020.

The following year, Natanz suffered further significant damage in a mysterious attack, for which Iran again accused Israel./BBC
