Thousands of Palestinian families are trying to flee Gaza City at all costs, after the Israeli army launched a major ground offensive on Tuesday (September 16) aimed at fully capturing the city.
Lina al-Maghrebi, a 32-year-old mother of three from the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, told the BBC that she refused to leave her home for days until an Israeli officer called her and ordered her to leave immediately. “I was forced to sell my jewelry to pay for transportation and a tent,” she said. “It took us 10 hours to get to Khan Younis, and we paid 3,500 shekels (about 888 euros). The line of cars and trucks seemed endless.” Khan Younis is just 23 kilometers from Gaza City, but the road was packed with tens of thousands of people fleeing the war.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the intervention a “powerful operation,” describing Gaza City as “the last stronghold of Hamas.” The Israeli military has designated the coastal al-Rashid Road as the only permissible corridor for the evacuation of civilians. But witnesses report massive gridlocks, convoys of vehicles stranded and entire families exposed on the road as airstrikes continue overhead.
The humanitarian situation in the enclave is worsening by the hour, with civilians caught between evacuation orders and relentless Israeli army fire.

Nivin Imad al-Din, a 35-year-old mother of five, said she fled south after Israeli warplanes dropped evacuation leaflets on her neighborhood, although her husband refused to leave their home.
"I couldn't take the furniture with me because I couldn't afford the cost of a big truck. Leaving everything behind was the hardest decision I've ever made," she said.
The cost of relocation has become far beyond the means of most families. Residents said that renting a small truck now costs about 3,000 shekels (761 euros), while a tent for five people sells for about 4,000 shekels (1,015 euros). With most families deprived of their income since the start of the war, some are forced to walk kilometers or stay in their homes despite the risks, according to the BBC.
