The Extermination of Gaza, the Road to Greater Israel, and War with China

The massive ground offensive on Gaza City has officially begun: hundreds of Israeli tanks, relentless shelling and the use of incendiary bombs on civilians, many of them children. “Gaza is burning,” Defense Minister Israel Katz declared enthusiastically, recalling the ending of the movie Apocalypse Now, when Colonel Kurtz repeats: “The horror… the horror.” For Kurtz, this was an inevitable fate imposed on himself; for Katz, it is an inevitable fate imposed on another people.

The attack was preceded by the visit of Marco Rubio, the acting US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor, sent to show the Trump administration's support for the genocide in Gaza - and the planned one in the West Bank. Trump chose Rubio, and not his loyalist Witkoff, as a signal that he was formally distancing himself from Tel Aviv, although in reality he had accepted every demand of Netanyahu. The murder of Charlie Kirk has so shocked the American president that it has turned him into a powerless figure in the face of pressure from Netanyahu, who now openly treats him as a submissive.

Rubio has never hidden his sympathy for the Israeli right. Present at the inauguration of the so-called “Pilgrimage Road,” a tunnel dug under Palestinian homes near the Old City of Jerusalem that ends at the foundations of the Western Wall, Rubio legitimized, according to the organization Peace Now, Israeli sovereignty over the most sensitive and sacred area of the city, “violating the idea of Jerusalem as a city shared by all faiths.”

At the same time, Israel hosted an unprecedented delegation of 250 American politicians, who will stay for several days to strengthen the inevitable ties with Tel Aviv. In front of them, Netanyahu took the opportunity to level accusations at Europe, Qatar and China, declaring the latter to be part of an “anti-Israeli campaign”. Without explicitly mentioning Beijing, he called on Americans to “reflect on the dangers” that come when a new power challenges a consolidated power, a classic warning about the “Thucydides trap”.

Calling Israel “Super-Sparta,” Netanyahu projected his country as the vanguard of a global battle: from the extermination of Palestinians and threats to Iran, to the new anti-Chinese crusade embraced by neoconservative and liberal circles in the US. In fact, for Netanyahu, the Palestinian genocide is the first link in a chain aimed at Israeli hegemony in the Middle East and Israel’s key role in the US–China strategic clash.

In this logic, Gaza is but the prelude to a greater vision: a "Greater Israel" that, isolated from the world due to brutality, turns into an autarkic but increasingly militarized power, a "modern Sparta" that sees war not as a temporary means, but as a permanent state of existence.

If these crazy ambitions are not stopped, today's horrors in Gaza are only a prelude to tomorrow's tragedies. / Adapted from "Inside Over"
