The Israeli air force attacked today the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. The attack came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to prepare a plan to evacuate civilians from the southern city on the border with Egypt, as a ground operation was expected.
The news agency "Associated Press" announced that 28 people were killed by the attacks, while among the victims 10 of them were children.
Netanyahu announced yesterday that the army had been ordered to draw up a plan to evacuate civilians from the city, as well as destroy four Hamas battalions he said were in Rafah.
"It is impossible to achieve the goal of the war to eliminate Hamas by leaving four of its battalions in Rafah ," Netanyahu said in a statement. He added that the intense activity (of the group) in the city requires that civilians be evacuated from the combat zones.
But the statement did not clarify a deadline for drawing up the plan or when the Israeli prime minister thought the more than 1.4 million Palestinians there would be evacuated. United Nations officials have repeatedly said that there are no more safe places in Gaza.
Netanyahu said this week that the cities of Rafah and Khan Younis are "the last two strongholds of Hamas. The group has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States.
Netanyahu's announcement came hours after President Joe Biden made strong criticism of Israel's military campaign in Gaza. During a press conference he called Israel's military operation exaggerated.
