Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the army to prepare to evacuate civilians from the Gaza city of Rafah ahead of an offensive against Hamas.
Netanyahu is not even heeding the warnings of the US not to carry out such an action.
Egypt has deployed 40 tanks and armored vehicles to the Sinai Peninsula as part of measures to strengthen security on the border with Gaza.
The city of Rafah has become the last area where Palestinians have been able to take shelter so far, after the start of the war on October 7.
For all internationals, Israel's plans for a new offensive in southern Gaza City are alarming.
The head of the EU's foreign policy, Josep Borrell, said that 1.4 million Palestinians are currently in Rafah with nowhere else to go, while they are also facing starvation.
"Reports of an Israeli military offensive in Rafah are alarming. It would have catastrophic consequences, worsening the already dire humanitarian situation," Borrell wrote.
