Israeli forces have launched a series of airstrikes on Gaza City, following warnings of a "powerful attack" from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The specific reason for the attack was not made clear, but the attacks come after a report that Hamas had fired on Israeli troops in southern Gaza.
Israeli authorities, including Defense Minister Israel Katz, warned that Hamas would pay a “heavy price” for the attack and for not honoring the agreement to hand over the bodies of the captives. “This is a crossing of a red line, to which the army will respond with great force,” Katz said.
Hamas, on the other hand, denies violating the ceasefire and says it is facing “great difficulties” in recovering the bodies of Israeli prisoners. The group’s officials requested permission to enter dangerous areas to find the bodies, but this was refused by Israel. “We have no interest in hiding or delaying the handover of the bodies and we are fully committed to the agreement,” said Suhail al-Hindi, a member of Hamas’s political bureau.
The Gaza Civil Defense Agency confirmed that the city had been hit by at least three airstrikes, while it was unclear whether other areas would be affected. In the city of Deir el-Balah, the sound of Israeli tanks could be heard, as Netanyahu ordered an intensification of attacks on Gaza.
