The Iranian regime has sentenced a 67-year-old woman to death after a trial that lasted just ten minutes.
Ms. Zahra Shahbaz Tabari, a political prisoner, has been sentenced to death on suspicion of collaborating with the main opposition organization, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK).
She is the 18th PMOI sympathizer to be sentenced to death during 2025.
Tabari holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from Isfahan University of Technology and from the University of Borås in Sweden, where he specialized in sustainable energy.
She suffers from chronic illnesses and the inadequate conditions of detention in Lakan Prison, along with the lack of medication and medical care, as well as constant psychological pressure, have severely worsened her health condition.
Ms. Tabari was arrested on April 17, 2025, following a raid by security forces on her apartment in Rasht. She is currently being held in Lakan Prison and has been tried by the so-called Rasht Revolutionary Court. The court hearing, held via videoconference, lasted only ten minutes; she was not even allowed to consult a lawyer of her choice.
According to reports, the case file contains only a piece of cloth with the slogan “Woman, Resistance, Freedom” and an unpublished voice message, which her family considers baseless and unacceptable. Ms. Tabari had previously been arrested for her peaceful activities on social media.
Born in Babol, she was arrested in April 2025 during a raid on her apartment in Rasht. Previously, in June 2022, she had served three months in prison in Lakan and then fifteen months of house arrest with an electronic bracelet.
We call on the European Union, European governments and all international human rights organizations to take immediate measures to save the life of Ms. Tabari and all political prisoners facing the risk of execution in Iran.
