"End all wars," Pope Leo XIV's first message to world leaders

Pope Leo XIV called on global leaders to stop wars during his first major address to the faithful after his election as the new leader of the Catholic Church.

"I also address the powerful of the world, repeating the appeal always at the right time: never again war," Pope Leo said on Sunday during a traditional post-Easter message in St. Peter's Square in Rome.

Speaking shortly after the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Pope said that today's world is facing parts of a "Third World War" - an expression first used by his predecessor, Pope Francis.

For the first time since his election as Pope last week, Robert Francis Prevost spoke out on major global conflicts - from Russia's invasion of Ukraine to the conflict in Gaza.

"I take to heart the suffering of the beloved people of Ukraine," Leo told a cheering crowd.

He called for a "just, authentic and lasting" peace in Ukraine, for the release of prisoners of war and the return of deported Ukrainian children to their families.

Referring to the conflict in Gaza, Leo said he supports an "immediate ceasefire, humanitarian support for the exhausted civilian population and the release of hostages."

Lastly, he welcomed the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan and called for a lasting peace.
