Demonstrators across the United States are calling for a "no work, no school, no shopping" as part of a national strike organized today in protest of the anti-immigrant crackdowns of the administration of US President Donald Trump.

The protests come after agents from the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, known as ICE, killed Alex Pretty, an emergency physician who was shot multiple times while filming Border Patrol agents conducting an anti-immigrant raid in Minneapolis.

Just a few weeks ago, on January 7, ICE agents, also in Minneapolis, killed another American citizen, Renee Goode, while she was behind the wheel of her car. And her death occurred during the implementation of the anti-immigrant operation.

Both murders sparked anger and outrage over the Trump administration's anti-immigrant tactics.

"The residents of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota) have shown the way to the entire country to stop ICE's reign of terror, we must shut it down," reads one of the many websites and social media sites promoting today's civil action across the US.

Many companies have announced they will not work during today's "blackout," or strike. Some schools in Arizona and Colorado canceled classes as a precaution, expecting mass absenteeism.

Rallies of students and citizens are planned in city centers, local government buildings, and churches across the country.

In Michigan, in the city of Birmingham, north of Detroit, dozens of students skipped class. Their convoy braved the freezing winter and was accompanied by car horns on the half-mile route to the nearest business district.

In Maine, where Republican Senator Susan Collins announced yesterday the end of extensive ICE operations in the northeastern state, people gathered outside a church in Portland with slogans against federal immigration agents.

Portland Mayor Mark Dion, a Democrat, also spoke at the rally.

"Disagreement is a democratic thing. Disagreement is an American thing. It's the cornerstone of our democracy," Dion told the crowd.
