The killing of US military troops in Jordan is troubling on many levels.
The attack represents another clear indication that America and its allies are facing a regional conflict in the Middle East.
It is a conflict in which the US is the protagonist and is trying to influence but which they have not managed to control.
It's moments like this that will mark some turning points; a troop shift and an attack that will force President Biden to respond. This moment presents the US president with a series of complex challenges.
In an election year and with the polls against him, he is facing an internal conundrum: whether or not he should retaliate harshly.
But his potential political challenger, Donald Trump, is competing with a narrative that Biden has dragged America into wars. This campaign is not at all in favor of Biden.
Geopolitically, the fact that the attack reportedly took place inside Jordan, a close ally, is remarkable and troubling for Biden as well as the Jordanian government.
Biden will probably feel compelled to send more troops to the region to further secure US bases and act as a greater deterrent. But it puts more of them at risk.
It will also add to domestic tensions for Jordan, where King Abdullah will not want to be seen as such a visible supporter of America. Remember that public opinion of America in the Arab world is extremely low after its clear support for Israel's war in Gaza.
Since the October 7 Hamas attacks, there have been more than 150 attacks by Iranian-backed militias in Syria and Iraq against US troops.
Remarkably, none resulted in any deaths, a fact that allowed President Biden to not feel compelled to retaliate.
Last Sunday, two US Marines were confirmed dead after they went missing during a naval operation to intercept weapons from Iran to Houthi fighters in Yemen. But the latest attack that caused shock in the US and globally is the death of 3 American soldiers and 34 wounded.
