Authorities seized more than 6 tons of cocaine in a semi-submarine, otherwise known as a "narco-submarine," and in two underground hideouts discovered in Colombia, the country's navy announced this week.
Officials released a video of a “narco submarine” that was captured off the country’s Pacific coast, as well as a video showing officers and a sniffer dog finding large amounts of cocaine buried underground. The Navy also released an image of more than 100 packages of suspected narcotics lying on the shore near a military boat.
Officials said the market value of the seized cocaine was estimated to be around $300 million.
The navy said the drugs were seized in Narino, a region on Colombia's Pacific coast bordering Ecuador. It did not say how many people were arrested or where they believe the drug cargo on the semi-submarine was headed.
Officials said 3,000 kilograms of cocaine were seized at sea, while 270 kilograms of cocaine were discovered from secret burial sites.
"The national navy reaffirms its commitment to the fight against drug trafficking and will continue to carry out massive operations against organized armed groups," a navy spokesman said.
A day earlier, the Colombian navy said it had seized about 3 tons of narcotics in the Pacific Ocean that were heading to Central America. Some of the drugs were seized after navy ships pursued a "vessel that was moving suspiciously," authorities said, and three people were arrested. The drugs were worth an estimated $97 million.
Narco-submarines usually operate very low to the ocean's surface, but cannot fully submerge. They are popular among international drug traffickers because they can often evade detection by authorities.
Although they are caught off the coast of Colombia, a country that produces most of the world's cocaine, narco-submarines have been spotted all over the globe in recent months.
In March, Portuguese police said forces had seized nearly 6.5 tons of cocaine from a semi-submarine near the remote Azores archipelago that was headed for the Iberian Peninsula.
