Canadian Prime Minister Reacts Again to Trump's Tariff Threats: Part of
Mark Carney-Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said it's no coincidence that U.S. President Donald Trump's latest tariff threat to Canada comes just ahead of negotiations to renew the key North American free trade pact.

In a social media post last weekend, in which he called Carney a "governor," Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Canadian goods if Ottawa reaches a trade deal with China.

The threat came after Carney's announcement of a preliminary agreement reached in Beijing in mid-January.

Today in Ottawa, Carney was asked what he thought about Trump's latest threats, he said that the US president is a "strong negotiator" and that some of the president's comments and positions need to be seen in the broader context of this.

Carney also said he will not respond to every post or social media comment made by the president.

The prime minister has asserted that his new agreement with Beijing to resolve long-standing trade tensions over electric vehicles and agricultural products is consistent with Canada's trade agreement with the United States and Mexico.
