Donald Trump's claim that he is considering leaving NATO is a major headline on European news websites, but political leaders across the continent are keeping quiet.
Why? The US leaving NATO would be catastrophic for them.
Although European powers, including the UK, have recently talked about the idea of a "European pillar" within the defence alliance, where they would rely much less on the US and do much more for their own defence, for now the truth is that they are still extremely dependent on the US when it comes to intelligence, for example, command and control and air defence.
America is NATO’s largest and most powerful member by far. Behind the scenes, European leaders fervently hope that Trump will not close the door on the defense alliance behind him. They believe he is more than capable of doing so. He has made derogatory statements about NATO before, but has been persuaded and/or cajoled into backing down.
This time, however, leaders across Europe, encouraged by public opinion polls at home, are standing firm and making it clear that Iran's war is not "theirs" and that they do not want to be involved in the violence.
NATO countries closest to Russia, such as the Baltic states, Poland and the Nordic countries, are anxious to see what the US president will do. NATO's strength lies in the alliance's promise that an attack on one member will be treated as an attack on all. Without the US on board, this prospect loses much weight, with a much reduced deterrent effect from Moscow's point of view./ BBC
