Bulgaria has found itself at the center of a diplomatic clash with Iran, following a warning from Iranian authorities regarding the presence of US military aircraft on its territory.
According to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, Tehran has expressed dissatisfaction with the US tanker planes that are at the Vasil Levski Airport in Sofia.
A document from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, dated March 18 and presented to parliament by MP Stanislav Balabanov, highlights Iran's strong opposition to this presence. In it, Iran warns that it reserves the right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and interests, in accordance with international law.
Later, Bulgaria's Deputy Foreign Minister, Marin Raykov, confirmed the existence of the document and stressed that the country is not involved in the conflict.
"Bulgaria is not at war," he declared, explaining that no aircraft take off from Bulgarian territory for combat operations and that diplomatic relations with Iran remain unchanged.
According to Bulgarian authorities, the American aircraft are part of NATO's strategic deployments, while parliament has not approved any decision to support military operations in the Strait of Hormuz region.
Bulgarian media reports in late February had confirmed the arrival of several US military aircraft in Sofia, linking this development to an increased NATO presence in the region.
