A New Zealand woman has been arrested after being caught on a bus with a 2-year-old girl locked in a suitcase, a police source said.
The 27-year-old woman has been charged with child abuse and neglect, police officer Simon Harrison said.
The bus driver was the one who notified police when he made a stop in Kaiwaka, 100 kilometers north of Oakland, after noticing something moving inside a suitcase.
"When the driver opened the suitcase, he discovered the 2-year-old girl," Harrison described, noting that the driver prevented "a much worse outcome" of events.
The child, who had a high fever but appeared to be in good condition, has been hospitalized for tests, he added.
