Cocaine and bananas are closely related, both products originating from Latin America and extremely popular in Europe. There are three reasons why cocaine is so often distributed in banana shipments.
Tens of kilograms of cocaine have been found in shipments of bananas to four stores of a supermarket chain in France.
Staff at Grand Frais branches in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France were stunned to find 40-50kg of drugs hidden under pallets of bananas.
Detectives are trying to solve the mystery of how the drug, believed to have originated in Colombia, got into the pallets and who ordered it.
Olivier Caracotch, the public prosecutor for Dijon, in Burgundy, said 10kg of cocaine had been found in a fruit delivery to the Grand Frais store in Beaune. Between 10kg and 12kg were found in similar shipments to three other stores.
Bananas appear to be the fruit of choice for drug traffickers in South America, following the seizure of a number of cocaine shipments in Europe.
So what's going on? Why are cocaine and bananas so often found together?

First , Colombia's main banana-producing region, Uraba, is home to the country's most powerful drug-trafficking organization, the Gaitanistas, as well as Turbo's export port.
Second, bananas, as perishable goods, must move through ports as quickly as possible, putting pressure on customs authorities.
