Prosecution's proposal to sentence former South Korean president is a "catapult"
A special prosecutors' team has requested a two-year prison sentence for former South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol, on charges of giving false testimony during the trial of former Prime Minister Han Deok-soo.
Special prosecutor Cho Eun-suk's team filed the request during the first and final hearing of the perjury trial at the Seoul Central District Court, arguing that the former president created the false impression that the cabinet meeting he called before declaring a state of emergency in December 2024 was scheduled before Han's proposal.
"The defendant claims that he called the meeting to declare a state of emergency, however, he had not prepared the required documents in advance," said a member of the group.
He further added, “instead, he collaborated with Han Duk-su and former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun to draft a false declaration of martial law after the fact.”
During Han's trial in November, Yun was asked as a witness whether the then-prime minister had proposed calling a cabinet meeting to give the impression of legitimacy to the state of emergency process.
Yun reacted sharply, calling the question "presumptuous" and arguing that "cabinet members are not puppets assembled to create a facade."
The special prosecutor prosecuted him for alleged perjury in December, assessing that he had not initially planned to call a meeting, but changed his mind when Khan pointed out that doing so would strengthen the legitimacy of the declaration of a state of emergency.
"The criminal offense is serious, as he knowingly testified falsely in a trial that the entire country was watching. Even now, instead of reflecting on his actions, he repeats false accusations to hide the truth, which requires severe punishment," said a member of the special prosecutor's team.
Yun, who has been held in custody since July, faces a total of eight trials related to the failed attempt to impose martial law, corruption allegations against his wife and the death of a marine in 2023.
In the first-instance verdict in the main case, he was sentenced in February to life imprisonment for leading an uprising by attempting to impose martial law.
