UN Secretary-General António Guterres, speaking to reporters in New York, called for an immediate end to the war and a cessation of hostilities by all sides.
He cited rising costs, saying people are already suffering from rising energy and food prices.
"We are on the brink of a wider war that would involve the entire Middle East with dramatic consequences across the globe. When the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, the poorest and most vulnerable in the world cannot breathe ," he said.
Guterres called for disputes to be resolved peacefully and said civilian infrastructure, including nuclear installations, must be respected and protected.
"My message is clear: for the United States and Israel, it is time to stop the war that is causing great human suffering and is already causing devastating economic consequences, and for Iran, to stop its attacks on its neighbors ," Guterres added.
