Qatar on Thursday demanded that Iran pay compensation for what it calls "illegal acts" against its territory, including all damage and losses caused by attacks during the conflict in the region.
In a letter to the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council, Doha says Tehran's actions "induce international responsibility" and demands full compensation for the damages suffered. The competent authorities in Qatar are expected to make a final assessment of the losses.
In the document, Qatar also reiterated its call on the Security Council to fulfill its role in maintaining international peace and security by taking measures to stop violations and hold perpetrators accountable. According to Doha, the targets of the Iranian attacks were "purely civilian in nature," which constitutes a violation of international law.
Iran has justified the attacks by linking them to Qatar's relations with the United States. At the same time, other Gulf countries that host American bases, such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, have also faced similar missile and drone attacks.
The economic impact on Qatar has been significant. As a major global energy exporter, the country has faced disruptions in production and supply. The chief executive of QatarEnergy told Reuters that the Iranian attacks have reduced its liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity by about 17%, causing annual losses of about $20 billion and jeopardizing supplies to markets in Europe and Asia.
