Sergei Mikhailov, a journalist and editor of a website based in the mountainous Altai region of Siberia, was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday for publishing material critical of Moscow's offensive in Ukraine. Since its inception, Moscow has undertaken a massive crackdown on dissent in the country.
Sergei Mikhailov was arrested in the first weeks of the Kremlin's military campaign in 2022, shortly after repressive laws were passed banning criticism of Russia's actions in Ukraine.
He had published information on the Internet about the deaths of civilians in the suburbs of Kiev, Bucha and Mariupol.
A court in the city of Gorno-Altaisk handed down the sentence to the 48-year-old after finding him guilty of "knowingly spreading false information" about the Russian military.
Prosecutors said he was "motivated by political hatred".
Russian journalist Sergei Mikhailov ran a small opposition social media channel called Listok from Russia's Altai republic in Siberia — a region that has sent many of its own to Ukraine.
