Those who arrived first at the scene, the police and emergency services, spoke of horrific scenes. Blood on the ground, on the bus seats, on people's clothes. Children and teenagers heading to the city's festival were shocked: they found themselves stranded on public transport as a woman started stabbing people.
What is known, a few hours after the attack, is that in Siegen in North Rhine-Westphalia, 100 kilometers from Solingen, knives were used again. At least five people were injured on the bus - three of them critically - before the driver was able to pull the vehicle to the side of the road, opening the doors and letting the passengers escape.
Mayor Andreas Müller was among the first to arrive at the scene. He told the Siegener Zeitung newspaper by phone that he was shocked, especially because it appeared that many of the victims were on their way to a village festival.
Soon after, news from Bild gave the first description of the killer. The dynamics seemed to exclude a plan, implemented with "political" objectives. The woman is 32 years old and seems to have acted - as the popular newspaper writes - under the possible influence of drugs or alcohol and is known to the police for drug-related crimes.
Other details were then filtered out. The woman boarded the R22 bus between Neunkirchen and Siegen at 19:40. There were at least forty people in the vehicle. When the police arrived, she surrendered and was arrested without resistance.
