Several incidents were reported on Sunday evening during a protest outside a hotel temporarily housing asylum seekers in Epping, a north-east London neighbourhood. Protesters did not hesitate to throw hard objects at police, while 1 person was reportedly arrested.
Some of the protesters threw bottles and smoke bombs at police vehicles that had blocked the road to the hotel, according to British news agency PA Media.
"Save our children", "send them home", were some of the protesters' calls, which were followed by other chants: "deport foreign criminals", "protect our girls".
The incidents occurred days after a 38-year-old asylum seeker was charged with sexual assault after he tried to hug and kiss a 14-year-old girl, which she denied when she appeared in court on Thursday.
Yesterday afternoon, a 33-year-old man was charged with participating in violent rioting after attending a similar rally.
These tensions are reminiscent of the anti-immigration riots in the summer of 2024, following the murder of three girls in Southport (northwest), who were stabbed to death by a teenager. The perpetrator eventually turned out to be British.
Protesters had raided hotels housing asylum seekers in various cities and had attempted to set fire to one such facility in Rotherham, in northeast England.
