At least 73 Palestinians were killed as they tried to reach aid distribution centers across Gaza on July 20, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
The highest number of casualties was recorded in northern Gaza, where at least 67 Palestinians were killed as they tried to reach an aid center through the Zikim crossing with Israel, the Gaza Health Ministry and local hospitals said.
More than 150 people were injured and some of them are in critical condition, according to hospitals.
It is still unclear whether they were killed by the Israeli army or by armed gangs. But some witnesses said that the Israeli army fired into the crowd.
The killings in northern Gaza did not occur near aid distribution centers run by the Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF), which is supported by Israel and the United States. Witnesses and aid workers have said that hundreds of people have been killed by Israel as they tried to reach the GHF centers.
The Israeli military has not yet commented on the killings that occurred on Sunday.
The announcement of the killing of the Palestinians comes as Israel issued a new order to evacuate residents from central Gaza and several other areas, after saying it intends to carry out operations against Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
The expansion of the offensive, into areas where Israel has not previously operated, comes as Israel and Hamas are holding indirect talks on a 60-day ceasefire and the release of hostages.
During the October 7, 2023, attack that sparked the war, Hamas killed nearly 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 others. Of those, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27 who the Israeli military says are dead.
Meanwhile, as a result of the Israeli offensive, more than 58,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to the Ministry of Health in the Palestinian enclave./ REL
